cool book5
I like the book. The artwork was wonderful and the concept is new. I haven’t read a good pirate book for a while since reading Captain Blood-which I also liked. I can’t wait for Volume 2 to come out. I hope it comes out soon.

A Good Manga Story5
I bought this book at the Scholastic book fair when it came to my school about a year or so ago. There are plenty of stories about male pirates out there, but a very few about girls. On the whole, I really enjoyed this.

The story is about Olivia Soldana, the daughter of a wealthy merchant, who can only look forward to arranged marriage, until pirate Captain Blaine of Destiny’s Hand confronts her father’s ship. Olivia decides become part of the crew of Destiny’s Hand.

Pro PHP Security is one of the first books devoted solely to PHP security. It will serve as your complete guide for taking defensive and proactive security measures within your PHP applications. (And the methods discussed are compatible with PHP versions 3, 4, and 5.)

The knowledge you’ll gain from this comprehensive guide will help you prevent attackers from potentially disrupting site operation or destroying data. And you’ll learn about various security measures, for example, creating and deploying “captchas,” validating e-mail, fending off SQL injection attacks, and preventing cross-site scripting attempts.

Here’s what Customers Have to Say:

Good information with lots of links to addtional resources5
This book is great because it’s thorough and on each topic it gives lots of links to additional resources. It’s easy to read and it’s organized well so you can find what you’re looking for.

One of the main things I appreciate about this book is that it gives just the right amount of information. It focuses on practical usage of security techniques but I also like to know the high-level picture of how and why things got to be the way they are. This book tells me exactly what I want to know. A good example is the the section on hashing and encryption. It gives some simplified examples of how the algorithms work and talks about where they came from, which ones are better and why, and how to use them. But it doesn’t dive too deeply into encryption theory which would only be interesting to someone wanting to code an encryption routine.

Some of the interesting things I learned from this book are:

1) I learned about the various hashing and encryption algorithms. Which ones are good and just how good are they. Before reading this book I couldn’t have told you which is better between md5 and sha1.

2) I learned all about protecting against cross-site scripting and sql injection. I thought I had already taken enough precautions on my latest website, MarsBookmark.com, but this section pointed out some attacks I wasn’t aware of. It also had links to sites with sample hack attacks you can run against your own website to see if it’s vulnerable.

3) I learned how to do captcha screening to make sure people registering for my site are real humans and not robots (I haven’t actually implemented this yet but I will soon). The book also pointed out something I never thought of – a hacker with a popular site can proxy registrations from your site to real people trying to register on his site and defeat your captcha by tricking people who think they are answering a captcha for his site. As usual, the author provides lots of links to other sites for more resources on captcha.

I’ve never before focused on security as much as I should have. Probably because all the information was not readily available in a single easy-to-digest book until this one. I’m really glad I found this book.

Unless you’re already well-versed in the topic …4
Unless you’re already very well-versed in the subject matter, ( sql injection, cross-site scripting, session hijacking, remote execution, sanitizing user data/input, ssh, encryption, ssl, dangers of shared-host scenarios, bulletproofing db installations, user verification, captchas, remote procedure calls ) this material is relatively comprehensive and valuable. Well-organized, well thought out, I won’t hesitate to recommend this one.

Serious, well-written, should be on your reading list5
One of the great attractions of PHP is that it’s easy to learn, and you can use it to build interactive websites in next to no time. Just like learning to drive a car, though, early success can lead to over-confidence. This book is a timely reminder of the pitfalls that lie in wait not only for the unwary, but also for the more experienced PHP programmer.

In keeping with the title, “Pro PHP Security”, the authors address many issues that beginners may not regard as being on their immediate horizon. While some issues are advanced, it’s a book that should be on the reading list of every PHP user. In addition to practical examples that deal with specific vulnerabilities, there’s a clear exposition of the need to understand good application design. Chapter 19 (“Using Roles to Authorize Actions”) is an object lesson in how a seemingly straightforward project can rapidly overwhelm you with complexity, and provides good advice on how to avoid this sort of problem.

I suspect that most readers will gravitate towards Part 3, which concentrates on practical solutions for specific security loopholes, such as validating user input, SQL injection, cross-site scripting, and preventing remote execution. Invaluable though these chapters are, the real value lies in making the reader aware of all aspects of security. Preventing accidental deletion of data, even by trusted members of a team, is just as much a security risk as the script kiddie trying to corrupt your data. This book takes a welcome, rounded viewpoint of security issues from a variety of angles. While not scare-mongering, it’s a salutary wake-up call.

Work the System: The Simple Mechanics of Making More and Working Less Description:

Winner of the 2009 New York Book Festival’s award for general non-fiction

Work the System: The Simple Mechanics of Making More and Working Less was originally self published in soft cover by the author in April 2008 and had modest distribution as it was sold only via the author s website. ”Work” was picked up by Greenleaf Book Group in the Fall of 2008, thoroughly re-edited, and released to book stores in hard cover May 1, 2009.

So you can live your life, Work the System: The Simple Mechanics of Making More and Working Less will guide you in streamlining the interlaced systems that drive every aspect of your work. The key is to dramatically increase the efficiency of the business you own or the department you manage, while standing ”outside and slightly elevated” from the processes. While providing exact direction for creating a culture of ‘’system improvement,” the author interlaces his own story of moving from 100-hour workweeks to 2-hour workweeks, while multiplying his monthly income by a factor of 20. Through all this he was the single parent of two children. The strength of the book lies, first, in convincing the reader to ”get” a new perspective on work and life that will foster the systems-mentality shared by successful leaders everywhere. Second, it provides exact instruction for revitalizing an organization through fostering organizational efficiency, and by creating simple documentation. What Sam Carpenter teaches is simple yet profound: Achieve a positive macro result by working on a micro level. You will learn how to analyze and refine your network of systems to maximize profit, create client loyalty, and develop autonomous employees who are passionately dedicated to the primary goals of the organization. The strategies will help you dramatically improve your own personal performance while decreasing the stress of being overtaxed and disorganized, by helping you

– Recognize the systems that are affecting your world and manipulate them into super-efficiency
– Maximize productivity when you know you’re at your peak brain capacity
– Avoid the time-wasting imperfection of striving for perfection

Pulling from his years of experience as the owner of a struggling business that he revitalized into the number one business in his field, Carpenter offers profound and concise advice that will revolutionize the way you view your work and, indeed, how you live your life.

Customer Reviews:

It all begins with understanding your processes and goals5
I personally have experienced situations where you are overwhelmed with work, are aware of the steps that could be performed to improve your efficiency but are “too busy” to make the improvements to relieve your burden. Appeals to superiors to be allowed to make the effort are generally met with, “after we complete this phase”, but unfortunately another similar phase often follows. In many cases the constant inefficiencies lead to a total system failure.
Carpenter nearly experienced a total failure in his company, a telephone service provider called Centratel. After acquiring the struggling company, he spent years solving crisis after crisis, working 100+ hour weeks and yet many weeks barely managed to meet payroll. Finally, necessity being so often the mother of invention, Carpenter reached the level of crisis where he had to make dramatic changes or see the company die. His solution was to look at Centratel as a system with choke points, feedback mechanisms and points of dramatic improvement.
After taking the time to document operations and procedures, Centratel experienced dramatic improvement in quality and quantity of service. The new employee management procedures led to an improvement in the quality of new hires, greater retention of employees and an increase in morale. All of this translated into increased revenue and profits as well as a sharp decrease in the length of his workweek. As has been documented so many times, reducing the number of work hours increased the productivity per week as the increase in quality more than compensated.
Giving all due respect to Carpenter and his achievements at Centratel, his experiences are not new to the overall understanding of management science. The classic example of this is the British experience in World War II, where after the outbreak of the war factory workers patriotically volunteered to work long hours. After the brief initial increase in productivity, there was a dramatic drop and the solution was to mandate a limit in the number of hours in the workweek. The lowered length of the workweek brought productivity back up.
Nevertheless, the advice in this book is sound, for the simple reason that it is rarely possible to improve productivity until you understand what it is that you are doing. This is accomplished by fully documenting all operations; the act of doing it forces you to understand them, the first step in the repair process. Considering what you do a set of systems is a workable perspective, just not the only viable one.

Work the system or the system will work you5
Sam Carpenter has brought all the main principles that will lead to success in your work and life together in one book. Some books will change your mind this book will change your life if you apply what it teaches. The author shows that our entire world operates based on systems, from nature to the human body to successful businesses 99.9% of things go right when the system works. The problem is when you or a business are not on a system you spend your time running around putting out “fires” and “whacking moles” instead of solving the root of the problem.”… orderliness and attention to detail are the roots of peace”. “…disorder–always leads to desperation”. The problems you encounter are really caused by system failure. Your job is to create systems that cause you to get the results you desire in life and at work. If you are a manager or business owner these systems must be documented on paper and be a working and changing tool that all employees agree on. When problems arise you determine what system failed and correct it. You should spend the majority of your time examining and tweaking systems to perfection, this is the best use of your time. Surprisingly,…”outright mistakes and random errors account for only a small percentage of total error. Most problems stem from nonexistent system management and show themselves as errors of omission”. Sam Carpenter will show you how to create a document that expresses your purpose, and then create principles and systems that lead to the accomplishment of that purpose.
The book is absolutely packed with excellent life and business insights that will take you to the next level in your life, career, or business if you follow them. I have had a great twenty year career in business management and wish I would have had this book when I started. I was always successful when I put systems in place that operate with or with out me but was unsuccessful trying to just make things happen by my mere presence and experience. The beauty is that the system principles also work for losing weight, relationships, and for me stock trading and investing. Five stars for this book, it should sit on your shelf right next to the other books that have changed your life.

Take the fives with a grain of salt?3
I bought this book based on the preponderance of 5-star reviews, and I didn’t notice the one one-star on the paperback version. I honestly don’t understand what the fuss is about. Admittedly, my corporate experience was full of “standardization” work, but this is hardly the first book to talk about establishing processes. If it’s the first book you’ve encountered, you’ll find it helpful, but not as insight-a-page useful as The Knack. If you’ve read others, take a pass, or at least get it from the library first.

Agreed, Work the System is more practical than the 4HWW, which is actually intended to make a different point (and support only one person, rather than a real business with real employees).

What I found was a lot of repetitive rambling about how great systems and control are, no real explanation of what took him so long to see the light, and no where near enough (for my taste) concrete examples of what systems were implemented.

Incidentally, the toilet paper story can go the other way. Over-the-top dispensing leads to more generous use of the product. People who live with fragile septic systems, or children and pets who think toilet paper is a fascinating toy, may want to reconsider his conclusions.

Sidebar: I find the author’s bragging about stiffing waiters for their failure to live up to his uncommunicated standards interesting. Google tells me that waiters in Oregon at least make the minimum wage. In most other states, their tips ARE their wages, so stiffing a waiter on the pretext of his or her giving inadequate service is (IMO) a form of stealing labor. One can only wonder what kind of service his own employees would give if they were evaluated (and paid) on criteria that were equally invisible to them.

What is Roland Mesnier’s Basic to Beautiful Cakes?

In his twenty-five years as Executive White House Pastry Chef, Roland Mesnier prided himself on creating a unique dessert for every special occasion, from elaborate State Dinners and formal receptions to smaller family gatherings and birthday celebrations. In Roland Mesnier’s Basic to Beautiful Cakes, the author of the classic and comprehensive Dessert University shows home cooks how to create desserts that can be beautifully embellished to serve any occasion by using a small set of foolproof cake recipes.

Hazelnut Ring Cake, for example, can be served on its own at teatime, as it was in the Reagan White House; or, with the addition of espresso-flavored whipped cream and a crown of caramelized phyllo, can become the memorable culmination of an elegant dinner party. Chocolate Dome Cake (one of the Carters’ favorites) can be topped with raspberry glaze, served with Grand Marnier mousse, or spangled with berries. Blueberry Upside-Down Cake with yogurt sauce is a light treat for a long weekend morning; the cherry version, with its lattice of whipped cream, will delight children and adults alike, and the truly grand Peach and Spice Upside-Down Cake with Brioche “Peaches” is a show-stopping confection, elegant enough for the Clintons to serve to the chancellor of Germany and the prime minister of England.

Even on the most important ocassions, Chef Mesnier believes that desserts don’t have to be filled with butter and cream. Recipes like the wheat-free Carrot Cake, the dairy-free Orange Sherbert Cake with Glazed Oranges, and the low-fat Apricot Souffl – Cake with Apricot Grand Marnier Sauce satisfy guests with special dietary concerns but still meet Roland’s exacting standards for taste and presentation.

The easy-to-follow instructions for these time-tested recipes anticipate pitfalls and offer sensible suggestions for when it is worth to invest in high-end ingredients and equipment and when you can get by without them, and how to peel and slice fruit for the most attractive results. With Chef Mesnier taking you through every step of each carefully constructed recipe, you can be sure that your cakes will be delicious and spectacular every time.

Soon you will have mastered the basic recipes and a few of the more advanced techniques, and you will be able to develop a repertoire of your own. like Chef Mesnier, you’ll be able to tailor your desserts to the tastes of your guests or the spirit of a celebration. Whether the table is lit by tapers and laid with your best silver or you are serving a few friends Sunday supper in the kitchen, you will be able to create sophisticated mouthwatering desserts that your guests will remember for weeks to come.

Wonderful Book. Easy to follow.5
I purchased this book after attending a cooking class that Mesnier had at a local cooking school I like to occasionaly visit. He was great. This book is just as a great. I’m not the best cook or anywhere near the best cook but the Cherry Trifle cake helped me when a cook-off at work for best Dessert. The American crust-less cheesecake is to die for; it even list sauces to top with — fresh chunky strawberry sauce is my favorite. All I can say about this book is buy it, buy it, buy it.

Wanted more pictures4
I have such respect for Mesnier as a pastry chef and am fascinated by the idea of his creating special desserts for all the special occasions at the white house. I was only disappointed that there were not more photos of his fabulous creations. This book has only 16 pictures. I craved much more visually.

Stunningly5
In Roland Mesnier’s Basic to Beautiful Cakes, Chef Mesnier offers a stunning selection of delicious and dependable cake recipes. From the basic but “Perfect Yellow Cake,” to the more time intensive and skill demanding (but oh so worth it) “Mouse-filled Chocolate Soufflé Cake,” each recipe guides you to a spectacular and delicious result. The “Peach and Spice Upside-Down Cake” is a truly a summertime gem. Alas, if only there were more color photos showcasing Chef Mesnier’s breathtaking artistry…

What is Punk Rock Dad?

Jim Lindberg is a Punk Rock Dad. When he drives his kids to school in the morning, they listen to the Ramones, the Clash, or the Descendents—and that’s it. They can listen to Britney and Justin on their own time. Jim goes to soccer games, dance rehearsals, and piano recitals like all the other dads, but when he feels the need, he also goes to punk shows, runs into the slam pit, and comes home bruised and beaten . . . but somehow feeling strangely better. While the other dads dye their hair brown to cover the gray, Jim occasionally dyes his blue or green. He makes his daughters’ lunches, kisses their boo-boos, and tucks them in at night—and then goes into the garage and plays Black Flag and Minor Threat songs at a criminal volume. He pays his taxes, votes in all the presidential and gubernatorial elections, serves on jury duty, and reserves the right to believe that there is a vast Right Wing Conspiracy—and that the head of the P.T.A. is possibly in on it. He is a Punk Rock Dad.

Here’s what Customers Have to Say:

The real deal5
I had tons of expectations about this book. I was wrong to think I would gain great insight into Pennywise after reading it. I was pretty sure Fletcher puked on people already. What I DID learn though was much more interesting. As different as we all think we may be, having a kid pretty much evens everything up. When Jim realizes he’s not all that different from the South Bay millionaire in dockers on a play date, the message really takes hold. The advice he offers on child rearing is honest and straight forward and devoid of new age thought crime. He takes his miss steps with a grain of salt, is humble when he manages to apparently do the right thing, and keeps it real. There are a lot of confusing messages in the child rearing advice world. Jim gets you back to common sense. Some day we’ll all work for Daughter #1!

A funny read5
This is a great book for us 30 or 40-somethings who secretly (or not so secretly) rage against fitting into the PTA/suburbia parenting mold but still end up there by accident and happenstance. If you wonder some days what happened to your mohawk and “screw the establishment” values as you scramble around like an idiot looking for your 7-year-olds fluffy, pink hair bows, you will totally get this book. Laugh out loud funny and honest, I would recommend this book to any punker, ex-punker or closet rebel.

Funny and very honest5
I bought this book about a month ago, and read it in no time. It was the funniest, most honest book about parenting, growing up (or not wanting to), life in general, etc…i’ve read in a long time, and also very touching.
From mosh pits, to bottles, breast pumps, diapers, mini van, and Warped tour and PTA meetings…It’s got something for everyone.
Jim Lindberg is very good at describing situations, and you can picture him going through all the drama, ups and downs of life and yet feel the inconditional love he has for his family.
All the incertainty of being a So-Cal Punk Rock guy, staying true to your beliefs, while raising 3 daughters…it’s all in there.
I hope he writes another book, i truly enjoyed his writing.

From Publishers Weekly
As lead vocalist and guitarist in the veteran California punk-rock band Pennywise, Lindberg writes and sings songs like “Fuck Authority” and “Fight Till You Die.” At home with his wife and three young girls, however, he oversees play dates and washes a lot of dishes. In his first book, Lindberg explores that bizarre dichotomy to its fullest, resulting in a fast read that’s part memoir, part parenting manual. Writing with wit, charm and unexpected tenderness, Lindberg plays mix-and-match with life in a punk band and life at home, using punk’s DIY ethic to address the challenge of raising well-adjusted children in a world ruled by conformity. Along the way, he shares often-intimate anecdotes about parenting classes, doctors’ offices, breastfeeding and sex. Lindberg gains readers’ trust early by refusing to sugarcoat parenthood, though he strives a bit too hard to prove he’s still a punk rocker at heart. Also distracting-and potentially off-putting-is his odd way of referring to his children-not by name, but by birth order (“Daughter number one,” etc.). Despite minor flaws, this colorful, captivating title deserves a large audience of adults looking to raise good kids without losing sight of their youthful passions. Photos.

Ageing Disgracefully Description:

Ageing Disgracefully is a delightful collection of short stories that takes a humorous and life-affirming look at lives of people who, though considerably advanced in years, are still behaving very, very naughtily.

With a keen eye for human foibles and a wicked sense of humor, Colin Cotterill has collected and illustrated—with words and drawings—the colorful lives of numerous atrocious elders found along his life journey, from his old home, England, to his new home, Thailand, with stops in Australia the United States.

In Ageing Disgracefully we entered the minds of venerable and not so venerable elderly bank robbers, murderers and serial-killers, as well as mere practical jokers, gamblers and perverts, who may remind us of some people we know or live with, or perhaps a person who stares back at us in the mirror!

The First Paul Description:

Bestselling authors of The Last Week and The First Christmas, Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan join once again to present a new understanding of early Christianity—this time to reveal a radical Paul who has been suppressed by the church.

Paul is second only to Jesus as the most important person in the birth of Christianity, and yet he continues to be controversial, even among Christians. How could the letters of Paul be used both to inspire radical grace and to endorse systems of oppression—condoning slavery, subordinating women, condemning homosexual behavior? Borg and Crossan use the best of biblical and historical scholarship to explain the reasons for Paul’s mixed reputation and reveal to us what scholars have known for decades: that the later letters of Paul were created by the early church to dilute Paul’s egalitarian message and transform him into something more “acceptable.” They argue there are actually “Three Pauls” in the New Testament: “The Radical Paul” (of the seven genuine letters), “The Conservative Paul” (of the three disputed epistles), and “The Reactionary Paul” (of the three inauthentic letters). By closely examining this progression of Paul’s letters—from the authentic to the inauthentic—the authors show how the apostle was slowly but steadily “deradicalized” to fit Roman social norms in regards to slavery, patriarchy, and patronage. In truth, Paul was an appealing apostle of Jesus whose vision of life “in Christ”—one of his favored phrases—is remarkably faithful to the message of Jesus himself.

Nice introduction to Paul4
For anyone wanting to read a nice introduction to the radical Paul of the New Testament, this is the book to go to.

Crossan and Borg do a fine job showing Paul’s clear teachings about equality and his counter-empire ideas, and show explicitly where Paul and Acts are at odds. The commentary on the book of Philemon is well done and in-depth. However, it would have been nice to see a much more comprehensive look at the rest of Paul’s writings. But that didn’t seem to be the purpose of this book; Crossan and Borg are simply painting a picture of Paul’s theology, not providing insight into every detail.

I have to say, though, that the chapters on the cross and “salvation by grace through faith” were, unfortunately, pretty weak. Frankly, it’s going to take a lot more than two chapters containing a select few passages from Romans and 1 Corinthians to “dismantle” the idea of substitutionary atonement and salvation as simply a post-mortem “salvation” from divine punishment. There are better, more comprehensive, books out there, though, on Paul’s theology of “Christ crucified” (see J. Denny Weaver, Stephen Finlan, etc.). The two chapters dedicated to the cross and salvation just didn’t make a well-reasoned argument (in my opinion), partly because of the lack of time Crossan/Borg spent looking at Paul’s words (though, I should say, I agree with most of their conclusions).

I’d definitely recommend this book to any Christian, or to anyone interested in the apostle Paul. But, don’t expect an in-depth, exceptionally convincing look at Paul’s theology; rather, expect a sometimes persuasive, sometimes lackluster, brief and easy-to-read portrait of the man who claimed to see Jesus on the road to Damascus.

The First Paul4
Whenever Borg and Crossan get together, it is worth paying attention. These two scholars are best known for their work on Jesus, but this new venture into Pauline scholarship is very good. The build on the premise that, in the New Testament, we have the Radical Paul (of the Corinthian letters, Thessalonians, Galatians, Philippians and Philemon). Then there is the Reactionary Paul (letters written by others–basically the Pastorals) and the Conservative Paul (Ephesians, Colossians). This distinction helps a great deal in understanding the movement in how Paul is read in the New Testament.
They present Paul as a Jewish Christ mystic who lived with a profound sense of oneness with God. They go through the writings of Paul and show how his message changes on various specific themes (from radical to reactionary and Conservative)like slavery, crucifixion, justification.
Jesus is Lord (ch. 4) is especially helpful, where they develop Roman Imperial theology of “Religion-War-Victory-Peace” and show how Paul responds to this in his own theology of Jesus.
But my favorite in this book is ch 5 “Christ Crucified”. This treatment of Paul’s theology is some of the best available for the lay person who cares about how we talk about salvation. They deal carefully with several popular explanations of the death of Jesus, demonstrating difficulties in how these themes deal with the theology, then offering a more positive, comprehensive understanding (that makes good sense).
In my judgment, these two chapters are worth the price of the book. These two men develop and excellent theology of Paul in language that can be understood, with an affirmation of faith that is very helpful. They have the ability (and the faith) to acknowledge problems in the popular theology of our day, but they move beyond criticism to develop positive, helpful explanations that allows the reader to build and strengthen their own faith.
Only one criticism. For this reader, the final chapter read as though they were up against a deadline and had to rush through this final discussion. It did not have the depth and quality of the rest of the book. However, having said that — this is a book of high quality that will be helpful for any more progressive, thinking Christian who wants a better, more holistic understanding of Paul.

Enlightening and Compelling Work5
After reading Garry Wills’ book What Paul Meant along with a couple of works by Bart Ehrman, I was really anxious to read The First Paul. I am very glad that I purchased the book for it has given me a detailed look at an apostle that I really did not understand.

As stated in the book, half of the New Testament concerns Paul or was written by Paul. Paul matters. As a believer who engages in critical thinking, I appreciated the authors doing all of the heavy lifting for me. As a “thinker” I could never reconcile the views that Paul held regarding slavery, women, etc. The authors explained this in a very straight-forward way and the `scales’ have now fallen off my eyes.

Explained from the perceptive of historical context, it was very easy for me to see that, yes, there were three Pauls. One real – two pretenders.

The radical (and real) Paul wrote:
* Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians and 1 Thessalonians, Galatians, Philippians and Philemon (which the authors break down verse by verse)

A person or persons calling themselves Paul wrote the pastoral letters:
* 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus.

A majority of scholars “dispute” the authorship of:
* Ephesians, Colossians and 2 Thessalonians

The detailed analysis of who, where, why and what certainly provides a non-contradictory view of the apostle Paul compared to the chaotic mess I have struggled with in the past. I also greatly appreciated the mind picture of the set of concentric contextual circles. It was very helpful in providing context for the writing of Paul.

While I have mentioned only a few of the highlights in this book, rest assured that it contains a plethora of entertaining and enlightening facts.

I hope you find this review helpful.

Review
“A refreshing and heartening exculpation of a still routinely maligned figure of the first importance to culture and civilization.” (Booklist (starred review) )

“In this scholarly and engaging account . . . Borg and Crossan successfully argue that we must separate the genuine writings of the apostle from the writings attributed to him . . . This well-researched and highly readable account is recommended for all students of Paul [and] interested lay readers.”” (Library Journal )

“Paul is one of the most controversial figures in Christian history—and one of the most misunderstood. . . . Many will be thrilled with this fresh, erudite portrait of the man.” (Publishers Weekly )

From AudioFile
Mel Foster presents Borg and Crossan’s well-researched account of the Apostle Paul and his writings. With assurance, Foster portrays the authors’ vision of Paul as one of the most contentious figures in Christian history, but also one of the most misunderstood. With compelling clarity, Foster perfectly renders Paul’s statements condoning slavery and the subordination of women and condemning homosexuality. Foster clearly details the differences the authors find between Paul’s early letters and his later “disputed epistles.” In a persuasive tone, Foster offers the authors’ observations that Paul’s writings move between the radical, the conservative, and the reactionary. The reason for this, they contend, is that the early church edited some of Paul’s writings to “de-radicalize” his views with respect to Roman social norms. Overall, Foster presents the authors’ views on Paul’s letters–the authentic and the inauthentic–with eloquent warmth. G.D.W. © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine

Customer Reviews:

This book convinced me to take the macro plunge5
I had been considering trying macrobiotics for a few years before it became trendy and this book was released. The first books I consulted were by Kushi and incredibly dry; they made it seem too challenging; focusing on foods I could not find and appliances that needed to be bought in order to start. Then I read Jessica Porter’s book and it convinced me to take the plunge.

Her writing is accesiible and she includes entertaning anecdotes from her experience with discovering macrobiotic philosophy. Hte personal conversation stlye makes the information easier to remember and apply than other texts. She makes macrobiotics seem posisble for any one, any where they live. I do not live near a thriving organic community, but she supplies a wide range of resources, online stores, helpful web sites and other useful books to help in the transition. Though she was trained at the Kushi Institute, she gives readers knowledge of the full range of approaches that exist.

Did you know that there is a macrobiotic equivalent to Reese’s peanut butter cups? She gives the recipes for these, as well as other deserts for special occasions, in addition to the staple dishes that constitute a macrobiotic eating system. I do wish tht the book had more recipes, and found the book “Cook Your Way to the Life You Want” and Cooking Whole Foods” by Christina Pirello excellent complements. They are not necessary additions, but Porter made me eager to read much more about macrobiotics.

Macrobiotics is learning how to balance food to meet your body’s nutritional needs, which will vary depending on your daily activities and stress. It tkaes a life time to master, but Porter provides excellent ropes to help you start immediately, if you so wish. She also provides a gradual (her recommended) approach. An excess of sweets, for example, is not recommended as healthy on average, but she give recipes for safer alternatives to combat cravings caused by mass marketing campaigns of the food industry, as you being your journey into macrobiotics.

There were times when I thought the book indulged a little too much into “feel the power of the universe” rhetoric, but the truth of the matter is that what you eat affects not only your health, but also your moods, and an improved diet helps increase your powers of perception, by making you less vitim to illenss and mood fluctuations.

There are some macro books that I have purchased and had to read again and again, because they were so complicated. This one I reread because I enjoy and am inspired by the writing.

Finally – a book that explains it clearly5
I have read many books on macrobiotics, only to toss them to the side in frustration. Macrobiotics always seemed so difficult, so time consuming and restrictive. I could never grasp the meaning of ‘yin and yang’ regarding food – until now.

Jessica Porter has written a book that is accessible, easy to understand and very witty! I have a much better understanding of the effects that food has on my body – and this gives me the power to make better choices. I am not a full fledged macrobiotic junkie (and may never be) – but at least now I can lean in that direction with confidence, not confusion! Thanks Jessica, for the best intro to macrobiotics that I have ever read!

Great!!!5
I’ve been following a vegan diet since 2002 and lost 200 (yes TWO HUNDRED!!!) pounds doing so. I was interested in macrobiotics, but it seemed so difficult. I finally found a book that made it so easy to understand and so fun to follow. Thank you Ms. Porter!!!!!

To anyone who is interested in following a macro diet, do it! Get this book and follow it. It will be the best decision you ever made!!!
